13th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet


Join us on July 1st at the Hyatt Regency Wichita as we celebrate sports excellence in our community! Awards handed out that night include high school, college and professional athletes of the year as well as the Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award which is given to the nation's top DI Collegiate catcher.

Kansas State men'ts basketball coach, Frank Martin, will serve as the evenings keynote speaker. Special guest, Johnny Bench will also be on hand to present his namesake award.

Thunder Hires Former CHL Coach of the Year

April 26, 2010 - The Wichita Thunder introduced four-time Stanley Cup champion and former Central Hockey League Coach of the Year Kevin McClelland as the 12th Head Coach in franchise history at a Monday press conference.

Jason Duda, the Wichita Thunder's all-time leader in every major offensive category, also officially announced his retirement and will take over as the team's Assistant Coach.

The Thunder begins the 2010-2011 season in mid-October. All 32 of the Thunder's home games will be played at the INTRUST Bank Arena. Season ticket deposits are being accepted now. For more information, call the Thunder office at (316) 264-GOAL.

2010 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award Watch List

March 1, 2010 - The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission released the Watch List for the 2010 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award delivered by Papa John's Pizza.

Fifty-three catchers were nominated for the award by their coaches. Because the award is given annually to the top division one catcher, the list will be updated to include other candidates until May 5, 2010.

Mr. Bench presented the 2009 award to University of Oklahoma catcher, J.T. Wise. Chris Henderson of George Mason University and Tony Sanchez of Boston College were also finalists. Eleven former Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award finalists are currently playing in Major League Baseball.

21st Annual Park City Wrestling Classic moves to Hartman Arena

The 21st Annual Park City Wrestling Classic will be held at the new Hartman Arena, March 6, 2010. The Classic will feature two clinics featuring Olympic Gold Medalist and 3 time All American Kenny Monday as well as local wrestling guru, Charlie Knox of Team of Hard Knox.
